The Neighbourhood Recycling Project was launched in 2010 exclusively for the student members of EEG as the summer holidays call for a high demand of participation in community activities. Under the project, the student members prepared flyers and use it to contact 20 neighbouring families to collect 150 – 200 kg of paper for recycling. Once they achieved the target, they were provided a letter, a certificate and an indigenous tree to plant under their name to acknowledge their achievements. From 2012 onwards, student members have been encouraged to collect more recyclables such as batteries, mobile phones, toners, plastic, beverage cartons and aluminium cans. Upon completion of the project, the student members were asked to submit the details of the families they contacted to ensure they are actively engaging the community. To further engage the students and test their skills, from 2015 onwards, the student members are also required to submit a small testimonial at the end of the project describing their experience performing the activities under the project.
From June to September 2021, 164 students participated and collected a total of
31,442 kg of paper, 3,864 kg of plastic, 80 kg of aluminium cans, 163 mobile phones, 939 pieces of toners and 160 kg of E-waste. This led to the plantation of 168 trees. This helped to save 943 million BTU of energy, 265 m³ of landfill space, 664 trees and 888 gallons of gasoline, whilst mitigating 128 MTCO2e of emissions.
